Lucknow: An FIR was registered Monday against senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan for his “underwear” jibe against BJP leader and film actor Jaya Prada who is fighting the Lok Sabha polls from Rampur against him.

District magistrate of Rampur Aajaneya Kumar Singh Monday told PTI, “An FIR has been registered against Azam Khan under section 509 of the IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and under sections of the Representation of People’s Act.” On Sunday, without naming the actor, Khan told the gathering in an election rally in Rampur “… you got represented (by her) for 10 years.

“People of Rampur, people of Uttar Pradesh and people of India, it took you 17 years to understand her reality. But, I could recognize it in 17 days that she wears a khaki underwear. (Rampur waalo, Uttar Pradesh waalo, Hindustan waalo, usski asliyat samajhne mein aapko 17 baras lag gaye. Main 17 dinon mein pehchaan gaya ki inke neeche kaa jo underwear hai, woh khaki rang kaa hai),” said Khan.

The video of Khan’s purported speech was also doing the rounds on various social media platform.

However, Azam Monday clarified that he had not named anyone in his speech.

“I have not taken the name of any person, nor did I tell the positive aspect or negative aspect of anyone. I only referred to a sick person in Delhi, who deserves sympathy, and who had once said that he will spray bullets on me with 150 rifles…I only said that it took people long to identify them, and the same mistake was committed by our party leaders as well,” the SP leader said.

“It was also known that there was a RSS pant on his body, and pants are worn by men. If anyone can prove that I had taken any name, or maligned anyone, then I will not contest the polls,” Khan added.

New Delhi: Dinesh Karthik has beaten Rishabh Pant in the race to become the second wicket-keeper in the Indian team for the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales. The five wise men of Indian cricket, led by M.S.K. Prasad, met in Mumbai on Monday and picked the 15-member squad.

Vijay Shankar goes to the showpiece event as the number four batsman and Ravindra Jadeja has been picked as the third spinner ahead of a fourth pacer. KL Rahul joins in as the back-up opener.

While skipper Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, M.S. Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah picked themselves on the back of some consistent show in recent times, there were three main areas of concern that the selectors needed to take a call on.

The much-debated number four slot, whether Pant or Karthik go as the second wicket-keeper behind MS Dhoni and finally, if the team will pick a fourth pacer or an additional third spinner considering that the wickets will be on the slower side at this time of the year in England.

The current Indian team management and selectors have often spoken about continuity and that is exactly what they have done with regards to the team for the World Cup. Having tried Shankar at the top, they have backed him in the squad.

The fact that Shankar continued to bat at number three or four in this edition of the IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad was another hint that the team management had asked him to settled down to the idea of batting at the top. Karthik has eclipsed Pant to the second wicket-keeper’s spot. Even though Karthik failed to do much in the 12th edition of the cash-rich league, the team management had already said they aren’t looking at it.

In the bowling department too, it was a case of backing an in-form Jadeja because not only has he done well for Chennai Super Kings, but also, wickets are expected to be on the slower side in during the showpiece event. More importantly, Jadeja brings with him solidarity at the lower end of the batting and not to forget his brilliance on the field. Pandya, having missed the series against Australia, due to issues with his core is back and fits in as the all-rounder who will also be looked at as the finisher.

While both Prasad and captain Kohli had made it amply clear that players’ performance in the IPL would not be considered, sources in the know of developments told IANS that it was indeed difficult to ignore some of the breathtaking knocks played by the likes of Rahul.

New Delhi: Actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s “AndhaDhun” has registered business of over Rs 200 crore in China since its release on April 3.

Sriram Raghavan’s “AndhaDhun”, featuring Ayushmann as a blind man, was widely appreciated in India. Now it is making waves in China, where films of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan have done well. Produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Matchbox Pictures, it released as the “Piano Player” in China on April 3.

According to a statement from the makers, the film, also starring Tabu and Radhika Apte, has earned over Rs 200 crore in just 13 days.

Producer Sanjay Routray, founder of Matchbox Pictures, said: “This April has been exciting for all of us. On the one hand, ‘AndhaDhun’ has raked in over Rs 200 crore at the Chinese box office and is still going strong.

“On the other hand, it received a standing ovation as the opening film at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) last week. It was an honour to be at this screening along with Sriram and Tabu. We are overjoyed that his vision and our film is being celebrated across the world now.”

Ayushmann too has been excited about how the film has fared in China.

“Cinema has always had universal appeal and it has cut across languages and borders. It’s overwhelming to see ‘AndhaDhun’ among such great cinema that has made our country proud,” the actor had said earlier.

Hyderabad: A 17 year-old girl who is Oman national was kidnapped from Jahanuma area of Falaknuma on Friday. The incident came to light when the girl’s mother approached the police and informed about the incident.

Rabia Begum in her complaint to the police said that one Ateeq who is a resident of Hafeezbabanagar under Chandrayangutta police station had kidnapped her daughter on Friday. She approached the police the same day and made a complaint. The next day she presented proof of her age following which a case was registered.

The incident came to light only late on Sunday when the parents approached the media seeking help in tracing the girl. “Ateeq had kidnapped our daughter. After we lodged a complaint, the police picked up the family members of Ateeq for questioning but later they were let off after some media persons came to the police station,” Rabia told reporters outside Falaknuma police station.

Rabia told that the teenager was born to her through her first husband who was an Oman national. The girl was born in Oman and holds Oman passport.

Station House Officer, Falaknuma Srinivasa Rao said they were making efforts to trace the girl. “A local Youtube channel reporter is in touch with Ateeq and the girl. He is asking them to come and present themselves before the police. It is a case of elopement. We are also tracking the mobile phones and trying to identity their location,” he said.

In a press release issued here on Monday, the Board informed the students that as the process of results has reached a final stage, it has been decided to announce them on Thursday.

Seoul: Oscar winner Brie Larson says turning director with “Unicorn Store” not only made her a better performer, but also gave her an “overarching perspective” about the process of filmmaking.

The actor, who became the first woman to front a Marvel superhero film with “Captain Marvel” and will next be seen in “Avengers: Endgame”, said directing made her a better team player.

Based on an original screenplay by Samantha McIntyre, “Unicorn Store” revolves around a woman named Kit (Larson), who after moving back in with her parents, receives a mysterious invitation to a store that will test her idea of what it really means to grow up.

“Directing makes me a much better actor because you see the entire process all the way through. As actors, you just show up. You don’t get to be a part of the pre-production as much and not see what everybody does on a team…         “It just gives an overarching perspective that is really valuable because sometimes everybody gets kind of caught up in their roles. They don’t see the bigger picture of how they fit in this… And with films like this in particular, where it’s beyond even what’s happening on the sets. There are people all over the world working on CGI, working behind the scenes,” Larson said.

The film, which released on streaming service Netflix earlier this month, also features her “Captain Marvel” co-star and good friend Samuel L Jackson.

The actor was speaking at the Asia press conference of her upcoming film “Avengers: Endgame”. She was joined by her co-stars Robert Downey Jr, Jeremy Renner and directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

“Endgame” releases in India on April 26 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Washington: NASA has awarded three teams from India as part of the US space agency’s annual Human Exploration Rover Challenge which invites high school and college students to build and test roving vehicles for future missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond.

The team from KIET Group of Institutions in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, won the “AIAA Neil Armstrong Best Design Award”, which recognises systems best designed to meet the Rover Challenge performance requirements, NASA said in a statement.

The Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering from Mumbai, Maharashtra, won the “Frank Joe Sexton Memorial Pit Crew Award” — for ingenuity and persistence in overcoming problems during the race —  as well as the “System Safety Challenge Award”.

A team from Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, Punjab, won the “STEM Engagement Award”, presented to the team that best informed others about rocketry and other space-related topics.

Nearly 100 teams took part in the competition, hailing from a record number of countries, including the US, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Mexico, Morocco and Peru.

Indian-American NASA astronaut and two-time spaceflight veteran Sunita Williams attended the second day of the event, interacting with teams and participating in the day’s activities.

The International Space Education Institute of Leipzig, Germany, won first place in the high school division with 91 points; and a team from University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez won the college/university division with 101 points.

Teams were awarded points based on the successful navigation of obstacles and completion of tasks.

The competition, hosted by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and held at the US Space & Rocket Center, this year marked 25 years since the inaugural event, the statement said.

“We are so proud to congratulate this year’s winners, and every team that competed,” said Bob Musgrove, Acting Manager of the Office of STEM Engagement at Marshall.

“The creativity, skill and resourcefulness demonstrated each year on the rover course are the very traits that paved our path to the Moon in 1969, and the ones that will continue to carry NASA forward to the Moon again in 2024,” said Musgrove.

Rover Challenge provides learning opportunities to students who, someday, may be responsible for planning future space missions, including crewed missions to other worlds.

After constructing their own rovers, teams attempt to traverse a nearly three-quarter-mile course with gruelling obstacles that simulate terrain found on Mars, as well as other planets, moons and asteroids throughout the solar system. In addition, they have to complete tasks, such as sample collection and instrument deployment.

Teams had a six-minute window to navigate the course, gathering points and trying to complete 14 obstacles.

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s motorcade came under stone-pelting in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday while she was returning from a shrine there, officials said.

Mehbooba had gone to a shrine at Khirram in Anantnag district to pay her obeisance and was returning to Bijbehara when the incident took place, they added.

One of the spare vehicles in the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister’s motorcade was damaged in the stone-pelting and the driver was hurt, the officials said.

Others in the entourage, including the PDP president, escaped unhurt.

Mehbooba is contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha election from the Anantnag seat, which she had won in 2014. The south Kashmir constituency, spread over the four districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian, is going to the polls in three phases from April 29 to May 6.

Hyderabad: N.Lakshmi Parvathi, wife of former Chief Minister late N. T Rama Rao, met the Director General of Police, M. Mahendar Reddy at his office here on Monday and requested action against those spreading false information against her on social media.

In a memorandum submitted to the DDP, she said that a person named Koti posted false information against her on social media on April 4 and attempted to tarnish her image.

She urged action against Koti along with the channel that telecast the information and social media sites in this regard.
