BJP leader killed in Odisha, shutdown called

Bhubaneswar: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Odisha’s Khordha town, police said on Monday. Party workers have called for a six-hour shutdown.

Khordha Mandal President Manguli Jena was shot at near Khurda BJP MLA candidate Kalucharan Khadayat’s residence.

He sustained critical bullet injuries and was admitted to the district hospital. Jena was declared dead on arrival by doctors.

Following the incident, the BJP called for Khordha bandh from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday. The party workers staged protests outside a police station demanding immediate arrest of the killers.

“We are shattered to hear about the murder of one of our party leaders of Khordha,” Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said.

He blamed the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for the murder of the BJP worker and said they will get a befitting reply from voters.

Eggs for breakfast benefit those with Type 2 diabetes

People with Type 2 Diabetes (TED) should opt for eggs for breakfast, a recent study suggests. According to the findings, a high-fat, low-carb breakfast (LCBF) can help those with T2D control blood sugar levels throughout the day.

“The large blood sugar spike that follows breakfast is due to the combination of pronounced insulin resistance in the morning in people with T2D and because typical Western breakfast foods cereal, oatmeal, toast and fruit — are high in carbohydrates,” said Jonathan Little, lead author of the study published in the Journal of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

According to Little, breakfast is consistently the “problem” meal that leads to the largest blood sugar spikes for people with T2D. The research shows that eating a low-carb and high-fat meal first thing in the morning, is a simple way to prevent this large spike, improve glycemic control throughout the day, and can perhaps also reduce other diabetes complications.

Study participants, with well-controlled T2D, completed two experimental feeding days. On one day, they ate an omelette for breakfast and on another day, they ate oatmeal and some fruit. An identical lunch and dinner were provided on both days. A continuous glucose monitor — a small device that attaches to your abdomen and measures glucose every five minutes — was used to measure blood sugar spikes across the entire day. Participants also reported ratings of hunger, fullness and a desire to eat something sweet or savoury.

Little’s study determined that consuming a very low-carbohydrate high-fat breakfast completely prevented the blood sugar spike after breakfast and this had enough of an effect to lower overall glucose exposure and improve the stability of glucose readings for the next 24 hours.

Little does note that there was no difference in blood sugar levels in both groups later in the day, suggesting that the effect for reducing overall post-meal glucose spikes can be attributed to the breakfast responses with no evidence that a low-carb breakfast worsened glucose responses to lunch or dinner.

“The results of our study suggest potential benefits of altering macronutrient distribution throughout the day so that carbohydrates are restricted at breakfast with a balanced lunch and dinner rather than consuming an even distribution and moderate amount of carbohydrates throughout the day,” Little asserted.

As another interesting aspect of the research, participants noted that pre-meal hunger and their cravings for sweet foods later in the day tended to be lower if they ate the low-carb breakfast. Little suggests this change in diet may be a healthy step for anybody, even those who are not living with diabetes.

Small rest periods in between work can help one be productive

The study published in the journal Current Biology found that our brains may solidify the memories of new skills we just practised a few seconds earlier by taking a short rest. The results highlight the critically important role rest may play in learning. “Everyone thinks you need to ‘practice, practice, practice’ when learning something new. Instead, we found that resting, early and often, maybe just as critical to learning as practice,” said Leonardo G Cohen, a senior author of the study.

“Our ultimate hope is that the results of our experiments will help patients recover from the paralysing effects caused by strokes and other neurological injuries by informing the strategies they use to ‘relearn’ lost skills.” The study was led by Marlene Bonstrup. Like many scientists, she held the general belief that our brains needed long periods of rest, such as a good night’s sleep, to strengthen the memories formed while practising a newly learned skill. But after looking at brain waves recorded from healthy volunteers in learning and memory experiments, she started to question the idea.

The experiment began when they were shown a series of numbers on a screen and asked to type the numbers as many times as possible with their left hands for 10 seconds; take a 10-second break, and then repeat this trial cycle of alternating practice and rest 35 more times.

This strategy is typically used to reduce any complications that could arise from fatigue or other factors.

“I noticed that participants’ brain waves seemed to change much more during the rest periods than during the typing sessions,” said Dr Bonstrup. “This gave me the idea to look much more closely for when learning was actually happening.”  They found that the volunteers’ performance improved primarily during the short rests, and not during typing.

The improvements made during the rest periods added up to the overall gains the volunteers made that day. Moreover, these gains were much greater than the ones seen after the volunteers returned the next day to try again, suggesting that the early breaks played as critical a role in learning as the practising itself.

“Our results suggest that it may be important to optimise the timing and configuration of rest intervals when implementing rehabilitative treatments in stroke patients or when learning to play the piano in normal volunteers,” said Dr Cohen. “Whether these results apply to other forms of learning and memory formation remains an open question.” Dr Cohen’s team plans to explore, in greater detail, the role of these early resting periods in learning and memory.

Ingmar Bergman actress Bibi Andersson dead

Stockholm: Swedish actress Bibi Andersson, who starred in 13 of veteran director Ingmar Bergman’s films, has died. She was 83.

The actress died here on Sunday.  Director Christina Olofson confirmed her death to several outlets. Andersson had suffered a stroke in 2009 and was hospitalised, reports variety.com.

Andersson made a name herself after her type-defying role in 1966’s “Persona” for which she received the award for best actress at the 4th Guldbagge Awards, the Swedish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Previous to the role, she was generally cast in more innocent parts, like “The Seventh Seal” and “Wild Strawberries”.

Andersson won the silver bear for best actress as the Berlin Film Festival in 1963 for her work in Vilgot Sjoman’s “The Mistress” and in 1968, she was nominated for best foreign actress at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAs) for her roles in both “Persona” and “Syskonbadd 1782”.

After her “Persona” fame, she went on to work consistently throughout the 1960s and 1970s and accumulated roles in more than 50 films, including John Huston’s “The Kremlin Letter” and Robert Altman’s “Quintet”.

Andersson had joined the Dramaten (Royal Dramatic Theatre) in her early years and continued to perform throughout her film career. In 1990, she began working as a theatre director, directing several plays for the Dramaten, Sweden’s national stage.

She is survived by one child and her husband, Gabriel Mora Baeza.

Abnormal proteins associated with aggressive behaviour among dementia patients

In a recent study, scientists have observed an association between certain proteins and dementia sufferers’ tendency, to commit criminal acts.

The research published in the journal JAMA Network Open studied deceased patients who were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or frontotemporal dementia.

“This study is unique in that we studied deceased patients, something that means we are 100 per cent sure of the dementia diagnosis, which is not always established while the patients are alive,” said Madeleine Liljegren, a researcher.

“In addition, we observed that the likelihood of committing criminal acts was nine times higher among patients with frontotemporal dementia who had accumulations in the brain of certain abnormal proteins, above all TDP-43, compared with those who had accumulations of tau protein. The TDP-43 proteins seem, therefore, to be particularly associated with developing criminal behaviour among people with frontotemporal dementia,” she added.

When a person who previously has been perceived by those around them as well-behaved starts committing criminal acts such as theft, shoplifting, sexual harassment or other aggressive behaviours, there may be a dementia disease behind these unexpected actions.

Researchers in the Neuropathology team studied 220 deceased patients with Alzheimer’s disease or frontotemporal dementia (FTD), who had been monitored at the Memory Clinic between 1967 and 2017.

Of these, 30 per cent had committed a criminal offence — 15 per cent of the total number of patients who had Alzheimer’s and 42 per cent among those who had FTD. The latter group committed repeated criminal offences to a greater extent than the Alzheimer’s group.

When examining the behaviour such as excessively loud laughing or unexpected shouting, the frontotemporal dementia group is also over-represented (75 per cent), compared with the Alzheimer’s group (56 per cent).

“It confirms what we have seen in previous studies. With these patients, the damage is in the frontal part of the brain, where our personality, including impulse control and empathy, resides,” said Liljegren, emphasising that dementia diseases do not exclusively affect the elderly.

“Frontotemporal dementia can also occur in younger people and it can often take a long while before there is a correct diagnosis. That is why, it’s important that relatives, healthcare services, the police and the entire legal system respond to altered social and criminal behaviour and provide assistance to enable these people to get medical care”, she concluded.

Safe workout, fitness tips for pregnant women

New Delhi: One of the biggest stereotypes in our society is that pregnant women should avoid anything strenuous but keeping fit during the nine months is one of the most important factors that keeps the mother and baby healthy. Do cardio and dont shy away from strength training, say experts

Certified nutritionist Kartikey Bhandari and fitness professional Shivam Bhandari have doled out tips for a safe workout and fitness during pregnancy.

*Planning the workout: If you workout already and just do cardio, you might consider incorporating strength training to your regime. It will help you build muscle which will in turn help you carry the baby around and deal with all the stress on your back during pregnancy.

*Start slow: Before doing any exercise, make sure your form is correct. Seek professional help. Relying on workout videos is not advisable. You may be doing it wrong with no one to correct you. Also, don’t trust your coach blindly. Ask questions such as the names of the exercises, muscles involved, benefits. Focus on learning.

* Always do it under supervision.  * Be patient: Results don’t show overnight. You have got to keep working on yourself everyday. You’ll definitely see results if you train properly, rest adequately and eat nutritious food. If any of the three are missing, results tend to slow down.

* Don’t just stick to one type of workout: Strength training is not all you need. To be able to move better you need to mobilise properly before any workout. To maintain or even increase your flexibility, you need to do the required stretches. Stretching and mobilising will not only help you release all the stiffness in your muscles but also help you perform the strength exercises better.

* Nutrition: If you’re working out but not keeping your nutrition in check then the workout will do you more bad than good. On top of that if you’re pregnant and working out then you will need a well formulated diet to keep you healthy. So here are a few things you should keep in mind.

* Don’t run away from fat. It has a lot of functions in your body including hormone production and regulation, transportation and absorption of fat soluble vitamins, regeneration of the covering of your nerves, building up of your cell membrane. A diet lacking in adequate good quality of fats can lead to health issues in the long run.

*Proteins are the building blocks for our body. You need it to preserve your muscle mass and/or to increase your muscle mass if you have resistance training in your workout schedule. Apart from that, protein also helps to strengthen your immune system, contribute to production of hormones and enzymes, takes care of your hair and nails as well.

* Micro nutrients include vitamins and minerals. Keep a check on your micro nutrient profile every month.

‘GoT’ star Lena Headey reacts to the backlash on her nude scene

Washington D.C: Actor Lena Headey, who portrays the character of Cersei Lannister in ‘GoT’ is being trolled, following her nude scene in the HBO hit.

As reported by Fox News, the actor opened up to The Sun about the backlash and said that she was pregnant when the scene was filmed, so she used a body double for a sequence, in which a cult forced her to walk through the streets naked.

“Some people thought I was less of an actress as I used a body double,” Headey recalled. “It was a bit shocking. [The stand-in] found it very difficult, obviously. It’s not a natural thing to do.” However, she added that she is not against performing in the buff.

“I’ve done nudity. I’m not averse to it,” she said. “I’m a very emotional actor and get really driven by that. To do my job, I allow myself to be really vulnerable. I don’t know any other way,” Headley asserted.

She disclosed how playing Cerci, in 2013, helped her sail through the trauma of divorce from Peter Loughran- her husband of six years.

“I tried to put into Cersei in a way that was cathartic for me, otherwise I would have had a meltdown,” she told The Sun.

Expressing sadness over the end of the much-awaited series, Headey said she will miss the show, but would be eager to strip herself off the “the itchy turnip,” the cropped wig.

“I hated that thing. I would have liked to burn it,” she confessed, adding that “everyone keeps asking me if I took anything from the set but, I didn’t take anything.”

Rajasthan CM demands sedition case against Adityanath for ‘Modi sena’ remark

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has demanded that a sedition case be registered against his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath for calling the armed forces ‘Modi ji ki sena’.

“Yogi ji is saying this is Modi sena. There should be a case of sedition registered against Yogi ji. If someone criticises the government, the person is immediately called anti-national. But who is the anti-national…The (UP) Chief Minister says ‘Modi ji ki sena hai” (Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s armed forces). Where do you want to take the country,” he told reporters on Sunday.

Gehlot said that while people are proud of the bravery of the armed forces, this is the first time the services are being politicised.

“In Pakistan, the military has ruled repeatedly. However, in our country, we have kept the armed forces away from politics for the last 70 years. This is the first time when attempts are being made to politicise the services. The day the Army starts interfering in the country’s internal affair as in Pakistan, what will happen? Our Army does not think that way. It carries out the job of protecting the country,” he said.

Addressing a public rally in Ghaziabad on April 1, Adityanath had referred to the armed forces as “Modi ji ki Sena” while drawing a comparison between the steps taken by the BJP-led central government against terrorism and the previous Congress government.

Later, the Election Commission had issued a censure to Adityanath and had advised the “senior political leader” to be careful.
